As I typed this post’s title, I thought “Hey, that sounds like a Dr. Seuss book—and a pretty delicious one in fact.”

Similarities to Dr. Seuss aside, thwack is the exact sound the chocolate mousse makes when it hits your dessert plate at Le Bistrot Bar Sardine, my favorite little slice of Paris in DFW.

Bar Sardine reminds me of a chic bistro you’d stumble upon in Montmarte. A scene played out in sepia with candlelight, cozy seating, and classic French fare prepared to perfection.

Their Onion Soup Gratinée (French onion soup) is served in the cutest little copper Cocotte, just enough to whet your appetite while delivering that irresistible Gruyere cheese pull.

For dinner, I can never choose between the Dover Sole Meuniere and lobster ravioli (both are incredible). But one thing is for sure: You or your dinner companion(s) must order the Frites. They are perfectly crispy, perfectly seasoned, and there’s more than enough to share. You’ll insist you’ll never finish them all, but you’ll probably come close (I speak from experience).

Even though you’ll probably be full by this point, you won’t want to leave without trying the aforementioned chocolate mousse. With enough salt to prevent it from being cloyingly sweet, the unexpected presentation adds another layer of fun to what’s already a superb dessert.

The server comes by with the biggest bowl of chocolate mousse you’ve ever seen and with a quick flick of the wrist, a generous serving is thwacked on the pretty dessert plate. Once again, you and your dinner date(s) will insist you couldn’t possibly eat another bite. You may even pause a minute to sip some water. Then before you know it, the mousse will be gone and you’ll be left with the memory of a wonderful meal.

Do you have a favorite restaurant that serves something in a rather unorthodox fashion? Do tell. 🙂
